A carpenter working on a Chico elementary school project says a serious hand injury on the job left him with thousands of dollars in medical debt, no health coverage, and eventually no job. In this firsthand account, the worker describes returning to work almost immediately after emergency treatment, only to later be fired while the project continued hiring. The video highlights concerns over workplace safety, medical costs, retaliation, and the challenges workers face when they are unaware of their rights.

Three workers have come forward with complaints alleging labor violations by Modern Building. Their cases are currently under review by the State of California.

Construction Wage Watch has obtained information regarding Sundt Construction, Inc. (“Sundt‘’), being accused of issuing improper and inaccurate wage statements to workers who, as a result, filed a class action suit. In April 2021, a federal judge approved a settlement of the suit wherein Sundt agreed to pay the workers an undisclosed amount.

According to public records obtained by Construction Wage Watch, since 2024 Bobo Construction, Inc. (“Bobo Construction”) and their subcontractors have been sued for hundreds of thousands in unpaid wages / penalties and issued Civil Wage and Penalty Assessments (“CWPA”) for which Bobo was jointly and severally liable, as determined by the California Department of Industrial Relations (“DIR”), Division of Labor Standards Enforcement.

Brown Construction, Inc., (“Brown Construction”) as a general or prime contractor, is responsible for ensuring all workers - theirs and those of their subcontractors – are paid prevailing wages.  As then Department of Industrial Relations (“DIR”) Director John C. Duncan stated in 2010, “Prime contractors cannot plead ignorance when their subcontractors fail to follow California's labor law. . . .
